In honor of school being back in session this fall, we sat down with Chris Lorenzen, Public Relations Director at Casper College, to gain insight into how higher education sustains and promotes growth and livability in Casper. Learn more about our local community college and the organization’s expansive opportunites below.
Q: Why is Casper College so special to Wyoming?
“The first mention of establishing a community college in Casper dates to 1926. It wasn’t an idea that members of the Wyoming Legislature immediately accepted. In fact, the journey for Wyoming’s community colleges stretched another 19 years of spirited study and debate before finally becoming law in February 1945. Once the measure passed the Wyoming Legislature, and was signed by then Gov. Lester C. Hunt, the Casper community mobilized an incredible effort to begin classes in fall 1945. The college was an important focus for this community. Their courageous efforts resulted in the first community college in Wyoming and an enduring community asset that made education more affordable and accessible to local residents.”
Q: What type of students make up your ecosystem?
“Students come from all counties in Wyoming. About 5% of the student population is international. The average student age is 24 years and a majority of students are female.”
Q: Describe the type of education people can find at Casper College?
“Casper College offers a comprehensive array of education and training services that span workforce training to general education for transfer to a four-year university; from athletics, the arts and much more. From 135 different accredited certificate and degree programs to lifelong skill development and ongoing training; each educational component of Casper College focuses on filling a specific role or need for education in the community while giving students a comprehensive and fulfilling college experience.”
Q: How does CC have a greater impact on the livability, growth and spirit of Casper?
“Casper College provides a dynamic lifelong learning environment for students that leads to responsible citizenship and economic, social, and cultural prosperity. The college does this by not only aligning its programs to the needs of the community and including Casper’s economy and workforce, but by engaging citizens to participate in: continued education, the educational process at the college, events on campus, and accomplishments of students.”
Q: What do you value most about being a member of Advance Casper?
“Advance Casper is an ongoing opportunity for the college to engage as a partner in supporting economic development in Casper.”
